Module 3: Measurement and Greater/less than
This Week in Math:
Students will be learning about measurement in this unit. We will learn about all different forms of measurement using standard and nonstandard tools.
We will begin with learning length and width. Students will compare and measure objects using standards and nonstandard tools to measure. Students will use terms longer, shorter, taller, shortest, longest, tallest, same as, equal.
Students will be learning the basics of what a ruler is for and how to measure with it. Students will be using cube towers (linking cubes like blocks that connect) to measure how many blocks long or tall objects are. Students will compare two objects and use sentences like "my bin is 5 cubes long and the pencil is 9 cubes long. The pencil is longer than the bin."
Students will learn how to use a balance scale to measure weight using terms heavier, lighter, and balanced.
Students will also explore volume/capacity and how much a container can hold using terms holds more, holds less, and holds the same.
Students will learn about area in terms of how we fill up an area and how much can fit in that area. For example, how many squares fit inside the rug.
We will begin learning about one to one correspondence and matching one item to another to find out which group has more/less or if they have the same amount. We will be comparing quantities within numbers 0-20. Students will learn symbols <, >, = to compare numbers. Students will be verbally comparing and comparing on paper as well.
