This Week in Reading, Phonics, and Writing:
Unit 3: Building Reading Muscles
Reading: Students will learn to dive deeper into each super reader power and build reading muscles through small group instruction, book clubs, and peer reading.
Pointer Power: pointing under each work in a sentence and n to skipping anything.
Picture Power: using the picture to help solve unknown words.
Sound Power: using the beginning sounds of words to match to pictures to solve unknown words. Sound out CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) words.
Snap Word Power: knowing sight words in a snap to help move to more difficult words.
Persistence Power: trying even when something is hard
Pattern Power: Finding the pattern that comes on every page to help make reading easier.
Prediction Power: predicting at the beginning of a book or in the middle using information we have already read to make an educated guess.
Story Book Talk: using our voice to sound like the characters would, changing our volume or tone to match the emotions in the story we are reading. This power only works for fiction books.
Readers Workshop: Students will pick out 6 level books and 6 interest books to put in their bag of books to read with partners and read on their own. We will begin learning how to "read" even if we don't know words yet. Students will also learn how to rotate into stations. We are starting with reading with a partner and library station. We will then be adding writing/phonics, guided reading, and technology.
Writers Workshop: We will begin learning what punctuation is and the types, we will learn about spaces between words, and sounding out unknown words. Students will use sentence starters to finish a thought using conventions or writing. Students will be using kid writing which means sounding out words phonetically and not being corrected as they are learning to hear sounds in words. As they get older they will start worrying more about spelling correctly and accurately. At this level we are focusing on spelling sight words correctly and sounding out all other unknown words.
Phonics: We will begin our first week of phonics learning about our writing lines, practicing letters of the week (sound, recognition, and writing the letter). Students will work in small groups on specific needs within phonics.

Phonics Focus of the Week: vowels and CVC words (like cat, pot, big, etc.)
Comprehension Skills: Character, Setting, Main idea, sequencing, and using story book language (transition words) such as once upon a time, next, finally when reading a book if we don't know the words. Fiction vs. Nonfiction books and their characteristics.
Sight Word and Reading Homework:
Sight words will come home every few weeks. We are going to tape a zip lock bag in their green folders, please leave it taped into their folder as we will always be adding to it and sometimes use it in class. I am asking that you partner with me in having your child practice the sight words every night until they have mastered the words. As an extension of learning the sight words I ask that you also read each night with your child and have them pick out the sight words as you read. Eventually they will learn how to decode and read the words and they can switch to reading to you! Thank you for your support!
